  • About Math Field Day

  • Math Field Day is an exciting and inclusive event designed to showcase students' mathematical knowledge and skills through friendly competition, collaboration, and celebration. Rooted in the principles of the 2023 California Mathematics Framework.  Serving as the culmination of a year-long instructional program aligned with the California Common Core State Standards for Mathematics, Math Field Day incorporates strategies to offer pathways for all students to succeed and thrive in mathematics by ensuring accessibility and inclusivity.  

    Key Dates:

    • Registration opens on Tuesday, January 20, 2026. 
    • Registration deadline of Tuesday, March 23, 2026. No registration will be accepted after this date.
    • Registration fee: Early-Bird Fee per team is $325 (four students and one certificated adult) if paid by Monday, March 2, 2026; $350 per team thereafter until registration closes on March 23, 2026.
    • Proctors & Scorers: Certificated volunteers’ names (Form Link) by Friday, April 3, 2026.
    • Payment deadline of Monday, April 6, 2026. 
    • Upload a signed Photo Release Form for each team member to this folder by Friday, April 10, 2026.

    • Proctors & Scorers’ Virtual Calibration Meeting, Monday, April 13, 2026. 3:15 pm - 4:30 pm. All proctors & scorers must attend.

    Events:

    • Mathchella - Hands-on math festival
    • STEM Fair - STEM professionals share their pathways and industry opportunities
    • College Fair - Meet STEM college representatives from local colleges
    • Parent as Partners session to ignite parent engagement and advocacy in mathematics. Led by Araceli Simeón of The Parent Organization Network
    • LA County Mathematics Scholarship for seniors due March 31, 2026 by 5:00 pm. Seniors selected are invited to the closing ceremony of Math Field Day to receive their award. 

    Math Field Day goes beyond a traditional contest; it is a celebration of mathematical brilliance and a platform to inspire students as they engage in meaningful, culturally relevant, and equitable mathematical experiences. It reflects the commitment of the Los Angeles County Office of Education to fostering a love for math and building a future where every student sees themselves as capable and empowered mathematicians. 

    Teams of 4 students will carry out investigations to analyze and apply mathematical strategies with two 40-minute challenges:

    Round One - Conceptual Understanding Scenario (1 team task)

    Round Two - Sense-Making Exercise (1 team task)   

    Each of these two categories will weigh equally in determining the final team score. Please refer to the attached Scoring Guidelines.

    The structure of Math Field Day is as follows:

    • Students in grades 4-11 may participate;
    • One team for each grade level per district, charter organization or private institution;
    • Four students per grade-level team (One - 4th, One - 5th, etc.);
    • Teams must represent the district, not individual schools within the districts;
    • Only students registered as participants will be allowed to participate;
    • Each grade level team MUST have a credentialed adult who will also serve in assisting with Proctoring (Credentialed Teacher), Scoring (Credentialed Teacher). Additional adult volunteers will serve as General Volunteer (Non-Credential Adult) for other duties throughout the day;
    • Upload signed photo release forms, for each team member, to this folder by Friday, April 10, 2026.

  • Registration Instructions

  • Student team selection is to be determined by each district, charter organization, or private institution. Regardless of guidelines selected, please note that each team is to be representative of the district’s student population.

    DISTRICT REQUIREMENTS:

    Districts, Charter Organization, or Private Institution must designate a person to serve as District Math Field Day Coordinator. The Coordinator will:

    • Serve as the contact person;
    • Distribute all materials and communications to persons involved;
    • Organize the district teams;
    • Ensure that team requirements are met;
    • Coordinate volunteers from the district;
    • Complete and return the registration form as directed.
    • Each grade level team MUST have a credentialed adult who will also serve in assisting with Proctoring (Credentialed Teacher) and Scoring (Credentialed Teacher). 
    • Designated additional adult volunteers (Non-credentialed) will serve as General Volunteers (Non-Credential Adult) for other duties throughout the day.

    The Coordinator Registration Packet will include (Day of Event):

    • A tentative agenda for the day.
    • Registration forms for participation. Please print or type the names of the participants by grade level, as they are to appear in the program.
    • Scoring Guidelines (an explanation of the scoring system).
    • Categories of Competition (a description of student performance expectations).

    Please Note:

    • A confirmation letter and map of San Gabriel High School will be sent upon receipt of your purchase order (or school check) and completed registration form.
    • Registration will be limited to 700 students (550 4th-8th Grade, 150 9th-11th Grade) with a deadline of Monday, March 23, 2026.

    District purchase orders or school checks should be made payable to: Los Angeles County Office of Education, and received by Monday, March 2, 2026 for the Early-Bird Fee per team is $325 (four students and one certificated adult). The fee increases to $350 per team thereafter. All other remaining registrant payments must be paid by Monday, April 6, 2026. Address payments to the address listed below.
